Eric grew up in Ucluelet on the West Coast of Vancouver Island and obtained his Bachelor of Science and PhD in Biochemistry at the University of Victoria. During his PhD, he trained with Dr. Brad Nelson at the Deeley Research Center and studied the mechanisms of IL-2 signaling and the effects of various cytokines on T-cell function in the setting of ovarian cancer. Eric then performed his postdoctoral fellowship at the Surgery Branch at the NCI, mentored by Dr. Steven Rosenberg. There he provided the first proof-of-concept that the transfer of neoantigen-specific tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes could mediate durable regression of metastatic epithelial cancer, findings that helped usher in an era of immunotherapies that take aim at neoantigens. In 2017, he moved to Portland, OR, where he established an adoptive cell therapy program at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute, a division of Providence Cancer Institute. In 2022, his team provided another first in human proof-of-concept, this time demonstrating that targeting a driver mutation with T-cell receptor gene therapy could mediate regression of metastatic pancreatic cancer. Eric leads a translational research lab that is exploring new approaches to improve the effectiveness of adoptive cellular therapy for patients with incurable epithelial cancers.
